PAST TENSE

Apa itu past tense??

– Past tense adalah tense yang digunakan untuk menyatakan kejadian yang sudah lampau / berlalu.

– Biasanya past tense diikuti oleh adverb of time (ket. waktu): yesterday, …… ago (two days ago), last …… (last weekend), in 2001, on sunday, dan lain-lain.

Bedanya apa dengan Present Tense?

– Present tense di gunakan untuk menyatakan kebiasaan atau informasi, sedangkan past tense digunakan untuk menyatakan kejadian yang sudah lampau.

– Present tense menggunakan Verb 1 (Kt. kerja I), sedangkan past tense menggunakan Verb 2 (Kt. kerja II)

Contoh:

Present Tense :  I go to school everyday by bicycle ( kalimat ini menyatakan kebiasaan, yaitu dia setiap hari selalu pergi ke                                                                                          sekolah dengan sepeda).

Past Tense : I went to school yesterday by bicycle (kalimat ini menyatakan kejadian yang sudah berlalu, bahwa dia                                                                                                berangkat ke sekolah mengunakan sepeda kemarin).

Keduanya menggunakan Verb yang sama yaitu, go, tapi untuk present tense menggunakan V1, sedangkan past tense menggunakan V2 dari go, yaitu went.

Cara Penyusunan Kalimat

Subject + Verb 2 + Object(optional) + Adverb (optional).

Kania (S) studied (V2)  Mathematics (O) two hours ago(Adv) in the library (Adv). (Kania belajar Matematika dua jam yang lalu di perpustakaan)

They(S) walked around (V2) the park (Adv) at noon (Adv). (Mereka berjalan-jalan di taman siang hari)

Bentuk negatif

Subject + did not + Verb 1 + Object + Adverb.

My mother (S) + did not + go (V1) + to work + last Friday (Adv). (Ibuku tidak berangkat kerja Jumat lalu)

I (S) + did not + have (V1) + any sugar (O) + this morning (Adv). (Saya tidak mempunyai gula pagi tadi)

Mengapa dalam bentuk negatif tidak memakai Verb 2?

– karena dalam satu kalimat past tense harus ada satu yang berbentuk past (V2), did adalah V2 dari do, jadi kata kerja setelahnya tidak usah memakai Verb 2 lagi.

 >> did not went ( salah, seharusnya did not go )

JUST LIKE A YOUNG GIRL

“Just like a young girl” is a short story written by Christina Koning. It focuses on teen story, such as love story, faithfulness, and so on. I will analyze about the plot, the character, the point of view, the setting, and the social aspect of this story.
Kitty, 17 years old, is a pure girl who just knows about love. She lived in small town, so she rarely hung out with her friends. She met Alain in Saturday Night and had a relationship. She really loved Alain and keep faith in him. She also believed that Alain also loved her, like she loved Alain. She did everything to make Alain happy. She also had to learn how to get kiss right because Alain was good in kissing. She obeyed when Alain invited her to come to his house. She knew that she and Alain would be alone in house. As we know that in America a lover was alone in the house, they would have sexual intercourse. Kitty felt afraid at first, but Alain make her sure that she wouldn’t have pregnant. He told him that it didn’t hurt and everything would be right. Kitty trust him, she gave everything to Alain, including her virginity. She very loved Alain and she didn’t want Alain to leave her. She was afraid if she didn’t do it, Alain would leave her.

THE ANALYSIS OF CAT IN THE RAIN

Cat in the Rain is a short story, created by Ernest Hemingway, which tells about the couple’s life and internal conflict. This story has a setting in Italian hotel. The conflict in this story begins from the American girl’s peevish feeling to her husband attitude.
There are four characters in Cat in The Rain. They are American couple, George and his wife, the padrone, and the hotel’s maid. They all have a different character. George is a disregard person. Although he has a wife, he didn’t give enough attention to his wife. The American girl or George’s wife is spoiled and childish. Although she has had a husband, she still wants to be spoiled and attended to her husband. She is strong-minded. She has to get everything that she wants. The padrone is an Italian guy. He is old, has a big posture and care to other people. The maid is a loyal for her job. She does everything that her boss ordered to her. For the psychology of literature, I discuss about American girl’s psychology.

Reading is important in inquiring English. Reading in pleasure is more effective that reading exposure.  Nuttal suggests that there are three major categories of reading, those are efficient reading skills, word attack skills, and text attack skills. McWorther (2002, pp 386-387, 397-398, 418-419) also adds other important reading skills namely distinguishing between fact and opinion, paraphrasing, and summarizing.

SEX, POLITENESS AND STEREOTYPES

 

Robin Lakoff argued that women were using language which reinforced their subordinate status; they were colluding in their own subordination by the way they spoke.

Below are the features of women’s language suggested by Lakoff:

1. Lexical hedges or fillers
2. Tag questions
3. Rising intonation or declarative
4. ‘Empty’ adjectives
5. Precise colour terms
6. Intensifiers
7. ‘Hypercorrect’ grammar
8. ‘Super polite’ forms
9. Avoidance or strong swear words
10. Emphatic stress

She claimed that women use hedging devices to express uncertainty, and they use intensifying to persuade their addressee to take them seriously. Both hedges and boosters reflect women’s lack and confidence.
